Protected Animal : Khar Mujur


Scientific name: Eupodotis bengalensisLocal name: Khar mujur
OccurrenceThis is a resident bird and found in lowlands in North India and South Nepal. Found in tall grassland with scattered bushes.
DescriptionLarger and stockier than lesser florican, with broad head and thicker neck. Male has black head, neck and underpants, and in flight wings are entirely white except for black tips. Female and immature are buff-brown to sandy-rufous. And have buffish-white wing coverts with fine dark barring. First –summer male resembles adult male, but reverts to female-like plumage in second winter; full adult plumage acquired by second summer.
Conservation StatusListed in CITES Appendix I and IUCN Red Data Book as endangered. It is poached for its feathers and for meat. Due to vegetation succession its habitat is degrading.
